Visitar monumentos es uno de los rituales más populares en Medellín durante la Semana Mayor, una actividad que se realiza cada Jueves Santo.Y es que la capital de Antioquia tiene la arquidiócesis más grande de Colombia con 341 parroquias, 834 sacerdotes, 2.945 religiosas y 162 religiosos, lo que la convierte en el centro más fuerte desde el punto de vista de la estructura eclesial.
Actualmente, Medellín tiene 232 edificaciones religiosas, de las cuales 20 han sido declaradas Bienes de Interés Cultural, 7 de ellas son de Interés Nacional y las 13 restantes cuentan con declaratoria como Bienes de Interés Cultural del ámbito municipal.
Las iglesias más antiguas que sobreviven son La Candelaria, San José, San Juan de Dios, San Benito y La Veracruz. Se cuenta que la iglesia de La Veracruz, que fue construida dos veces, fue la causa del primer trabajo importante de fundición de Medellín.26

Currently, Medellín has 232 religious buildings, of which 20 have been declared Assets of Cultural Interest, 7 of them are of National Interest and the remaining 13 have been declared Assets of Cultural Interest at the municipal level.
The oldest surviving churches are La Candelaria, San José, San Juan de Dios, San Benito and La Veracruz. It is said that the church of La Veracruz, which was built twice, was the cause of the first important foundry work in Medellín.26
